Before designing your space, it’s important to seek inspiration. Rather than focussing on rooms, it’s worth considering more abstract themes to begin with to help identify mood, colour, texture and pattern. Inspiration can come from anywhere. Think about your favourite places. What is it about them that you like? How can you bring that same feeling home? What colours are you drawn to? How do they make you feel? Create a mood board and leave it in a place that will inspire you. Pin the images to the wall or use it as wallpaper on your computer. Live with it for a while. Change or add images as the mood takes you.

Inspirational rooms
Once you’re happy that it conveys the right mood, now is the time to research interiors. Take the same approach. Collate images that appeal to you. See if you can identify why. Is it the style of furniture, the colour of the walls or the layout of the room? Start to build a picture; create a vision for the room. You need to know what you’re aiming for. Only then can you begin to design the actual space.
