Assess your wardrobe

Before the new season begins it’s important to review the clothes you already have before making any new purchases. It’s tempting to buy in the sales or buy from the latest collections, but often we don’t need as much as we think. It’s not a bargain if we already have it or don’t really need it. So many of us buy individual pieces without checking that we have other items to wear with it. We end up having to buy yet more clothes to complete the outfit.

Document your outfits

While the sales are on in the shops, that is often the time to stay home and re-evaluate your wardrobe. Before you start, make a list of all the occasions you need outfits for. Think about how often these events occur. How many changes of clothes do you actually need? How many times do you need formal wear? What activities are you doing to relax and what sort of clothing is required? Break down the outfits into individual items. Have you got all you need or is there a gap? Would it be helpful to have new shoes to improve an existing outfit? Is it just missing some accessories? Do any of the items just need mending? Can you make them look like new? At the end of the exercise you should have a short list of items that you need to shop for to revitalise your existing wardrobe.
