Mindful design
So what is mindful design? Well, it is a philosophy that aims to consider not just the aesthetics of design, but the effect the design will have on our mental wellbeing. The main objective is to create an environment that promotes only positive feelings. Specifically, a home designed to be a sanctuary away from the stress of everyday life. It should allow you to operate with minimum effort, be a pleasure to live in and help you recharge, ready to face the world again.
There are a number of principles that underpin the design process;
- creating space to breathe
- light and scent to uplift
- quiet and order for ease
- the comfort of soft, natural materials
- personal touches to connect to the emotions.
Pattern and materials are influenced by the shape and texture of nature. Design choices are well considered. Each piece carefully chosen for its timelessness, quality and purpose. Items on display have meaning. Everything else is hidden away out of sight in its place.
The style is quiet. Neutral tones bring balance and serenity while highlights of colour inject personality and seasonal change. Pattern is kept to a minimum so as not to distract. Similar shades blend seamlessly from one room to another. A sense of calm prevails.
My story
I began my journey as a fashion buyer for a major high street retailer. I spent many years learning the art of commercial design under strict budgets and timeframes. Travelling the world for ideas, I gained a love of retail, developed an appreciation of quality and an eye for detail.
In addition to developing product, I also became involved in marketing, helping to promote the positive benefits of each design. I became passionate about the importance of communication and excited about the possibilities of digital media. I joined a number of graphic design consultancies and led teams to develop marketing strategies for brands across a variety of sectors.
Throughout this time, I continued to pursue my love of interiors. I decorated my own properties in London, creating houses that were admired by others, which evolved into commissions. My success led me to start my own business, which suited my lifestyle as I wanted to start a family and preferred to work from home. I now have a husband, three children and a dog. I live in Buckinghamshire in a house I designed and built and am in the process of developing the interior.
While designing my own house I realised I wanted something more from the interior than just a nice aesthetic. My increasingly busy life had led me to seek the calming benefits of yoga and alternative therapies but when I came home, I wanted this feeling to continue. I realised, as I was designing the interior, that I was actually striving to create a sanctuary; a home that would not only make my life easier, but also improve my wellbeing. My home is still very much a work in progress, but I wanted to start to share my ideas and begin a conversation about the benefits of connecting your emotions to your living space.
