A time to declutter

February is the perfect time of the year to have a clear out. We are often confined to our homes so turn it to your advantage. In between seasons we are tired of the last term and not quite ready for the next. When the weather is at its worst, use the time indoors to re-evaluate your things. Take it a step at a time. Don’t make it overwhelming. Set yourself a manageable amount of time and stick to it. Focus on one drawer at a time. Involve the whole family. Plan a treat for everyone to enjoy afterwards. Watch tv, play a game or enjoy a slice of cake together as a reward.

Create space and order

It’s a good exercise to put away things in the attic that you won’t need for the next few months. As you put them away, ask yourself if you still need it. Did you use it? Will you want to use it again? If the answer is no, then find a way to dispose of it responsibly. Can it go to charity, to a friend or be sold online? If the answer is yes, then store it away neatly and in good condition. Make the box a pleasure to open when you return to it later on in the year.

This decluttering exercise is therapeutic. It frees up space for the next seasonal items. Your wardrobe and drawers can breathe. You can see things more easily. You now know where things are.
